A statement by Netflix from Thursday states:
"Prior to its fourth-season premiere,
Netflix and Media Rights Capital are thrilled to announce that House of Cards will return for a
fifth season in 2017. Concurrent with the renewal, creator and showrunner Beau
Willimon is departing the critically acclaimed series. Netflix and MRC owe a
tremendous debt of gratitude to Beau Willimon for his strong narrative vision
for House of Cards over the show’s
first four seasons. As an Academy Award-nominated writer, he made his first
foray into television and built a riveting and critically acclaimed series,
establishing his place in TV history. The producers, cast and crew join us in
wishing Beau the best in his next creative adventure."
So, as it turns out there is a good and
a bad news for the fans of Netflix’s original series. On a brighter side House
of Cards has been renewed for a fifth season set to premier in 2017 but,
unfortunately, the man who made the TV show what it is today will not be involved
with it anymore; creatively or otherwise. According to ‘a well-placed source’
of Hollywood Reporter series lead creator and show runner, Beau Willimon, will
not return to script the fifth season of acclaimed political drama. Willimon
who previously co-wrote the Golden Globe winning screenplay Ides of March was
at the helm of all day-to-day and creative affairs of the show for 4
consecutive seasons. However, as reported the playwright will now be focusing
on writing (and maybe producing) an original play.
"After five years and four seasons,
it's time for me to move on to new endeavors, but I'm supremely proud of what
we've built together, wish the show much continued success, and leave it in the
hands of a very capable team." - added Beau Willimon.
Even though, no further information is
available about his next project but we have high hopes and strong anticipation
considering his much-admired work on TV and cinema. The announcement itself
comes at a time when fans were eagerly waiting for the premier of fourth season.
A comparatively slower story progression and weaker character development
resulted in lackluster reviews of the third season but continuous increase in TV
ratings and viewership means that stakes for the March 4th premier
are high as ever.
With only 5 weeks left before the new
season hits Netflix the marketing minds behind the show have successfully
generated excitement and exhilaration among fans with a genius-ly crafted
Underwood 2016 campaign featuring thrilling teaser trailers and posters. Have a
look.
